Frank-Scarab is in 1/32
I'm just getting this in under the wire, but I'm sending in my enrty for the
slot car contest. Here's a little background on the car. It's a 1958 Scarab
made from a fiberglass body, handmade brass chassis housing a Strombecker
Scuttler motor, Cox gear and MRRC guide. The drivers head is resin cast
Ninco, rims are Revell with Auto Hobbies resin Halibrand copies. EJ's 15
tires on the back, Auto Hobbies Goodyears on the front.
The car is really part of a duo and I konw that there is only one entry into
the contest, but I'm including the picture of the other car with the Scarab,
as well as a picture of the inspiration to build these two just for fun. The
other car is a 1958 Lister-Corvette with the same layout as the Scarab
except I used 1/24 Strombecker rims and inserts cut down from the 1/32
Monogram Cobra wheels and a Revell driver's head. I would've entered it, but
I haven't had the chance to make a windshield just yet, so it's not totally
finished.
The Lister in real life belonged in the from the mid 70's thru mid '90's to
Mike Blackie, my high school shop teacher. The Scarab during the same time
period belonged to Don Orosco, and was team owner Lance Reventlow's personal
car when it was new. I spent many, many race days at Laguna Seca and Sears
Point during the 1987-94 period as a spectator watching these two go at it
hammer and tongs, drifting and sliding like crazy.
I'm too young to have been around when these cars were new, but the
excitement of those races I witnessed means as much to me as anyone who saw
cars like that race in the 50's. Sadly, Mike sold the car in the mid-90's
and it went to England where it was promptly totalled. Don sold the Scarab a
couple of years later, so the pictures are all I have left of these epic
battles- until now. I thought it would be a great tribute to recreate these
two for my 1/32nd track. The score can continue to be settled and it brings
a great sense of place to me to do this. So here are the results.
Thanks for everything-
